Cory Monteith has struggled with substance abuse for years.
“Glee” star Cory Monteith is in rehab for substance addiction, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is Monteith’s second time in rehab. The actor took his first trip to rehab when he was 19.
THR reports that Monteith “voluntarily” entered rehab for substance addiction. His rep told the website that the actor is requesting “respect and privacy” as he tries to overcome his struggle with substance abuse.
According to THR, “Glee” is in the process of shooting its fourth season. Despite Monteith’s absence, production on the remaining two episodes is not expected to be disrupted. In a statement to THR, 20th Century Fox TV said that “everyone at the show wishes him well.” Monteith plays Finn Hudson on “Glee.”
Monteith’s “Glee” co-stars have his back, tweeting support for their friend while he deals with his personal struggles. Amber Riley said, “support you big bro.” Harry Shum Jr wrote, “get well soon my friend!” And, Chris Colfer added, “Anyone who helps themselves is a hero in my book.”
Monteith’s girlfriend, Lea Michele, also made a public display of support. “I love and support Cory,” Michele said, according to TheCelebrityCafe.com. She added that she will be his shoulder to lean on during his time in rehab.
Monteith has struggled with substance abuse for years. In 2011, the actor told Parade magazine that he’s “lucky to be alive.” The “Glee” star said that he dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and that at one point his life was “out of control.” Monteith also admitted that by age 13 he was skipping school to get drunk and smoke pot. By the time he dropped out of high school, the actor said he had gone to 12 different schools.
Here’s to hoping that Monteith can overcome his demons and continue to star in hit TV shows.
