Jay Leno slams NBC bosses with ‘Tonight Show’ jokes

Leno, who took over "The Tonight Show" from Johnny Carson in 1992, will reportedly be replaced by Jimmy Fallon next year.

You’re probably well aware by now that NBC will reportedly replace “The Tonight Show” host Jay Leno with “Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon in 2014. Leno, who took over “The Tonight Show” from Johnny Carson in 1992, is handling this news as he handles all other news: by telling a few jokes.

“They are sending my wife and I on an all expenses paid Carnival cruise…So it looks like it’s going to be OK,” Leno told his audience, referring to Carnival’s recent troubles with power outages and overflowing toilets.

In another joke, Leno tells the story of a man found with a knife blade in his back. “Imagine that, the guy had a knife in his back for three years. He must’ve worked at NBC too,” Leno said. According to The Associated Press, NBC has asked Leno to stop telling jokes at their expense.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fallon recently contacted Leno in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the whole Leno-Conan O’Brien mess. A source told THR that Fallon wants the transition to be as smooth as possible and that he’s uncomfortable “with all this noise” being generated by the media. “He didn’t expect this,” the source added.

Leno’s work ethic and generosity are well documented. The AP reported back in August 2012 that “The Tonight Show” host took a pay cut to prevent some of his staffers from losing their jobs after approximately 24 workers were laid off. The AP added that Leno’s salary was reduced to approximately $20 million annually. In 2009, Leno held “Jay’s Comedy Stimulus Plan,” a free concert to help Detroit residents and others who lost their jobs during the country’s economic recession.

Should Leno’s contract be renewed? Is Fallon the right choice to replace Leno? What was your take on the whole Leno-Conan debacle at NBC? Who’s your favorite late night comedian? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
