Report: Daft Punk to release first studio album in eight years

Daft Punk inks deal with Columbia.

Attention Daft Punk fans: The French dance duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo is back after inking a new record deal with the Columbia label, according to the Guardian. Daft Punk is set to release their first studio album in eight years in May.

The Guardian points out that very few details are known about the group’s fourth studio album. However, Paul Williams, Chilly Gonzales, Panda Bear and Giorgio Moroder are reported to have collaborated with the duo.

“Daft Punk has always been a big influence,” German electronic producer Boys Noize recently told MTV News. “Not because of the songs, but about that sound and production. To this day no one got on that level. No one sounds like Daft Punk and I’m very, very excited to hear their new stuff.”

Not wanting to reveal too much, Boys Noize said that several sources in the know said that the album will be “amazing.”

According to the Guardian, Daft Punk last played in Britain at the Wireless festival in 2007. The newspaper says that the current chances of the band touring in 2013 are not good.

There were also rumors that Daft Punk would perform at Coachella 2013, but those rumors were put to bed when this year’s lineup was announced.

Daft Punk’s work may be more recognizable to some as the music behind Disney’s “Tron Legacy.” Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter worked for two years on the score for Disney’s follow-up to the 1982 original.

Music supervisor Jason Bentley, who worked with the French dance duo, told MTV News back in 2010 that the due might make a film in the future.

“They were looking at this as much more than a composer gig,” Bentley said. “It was going to be an education in filmmaking. I wouldn’t be surprised if they made movies from here. There were too many questions about lighting and cameras and lenses or effects. The Daft Punk guys are very, very interested in filmmaking.”

Whether or not they’ve spent the last eight years working on a film or just putting together an amazing album, Daft Punk’s fans are certainly eager to hear their new work. This will be the group’s first album since 2005’s “Human After All.”
