Report: Burt Reynolds and his mustache are ‘feeling better’ after flu scare

Reynolds is doing betters, says rep.

Actor Burt Reynolds and his famous mustache are “feeling better” after a flu scare, the actor’s rep said Saturday, according to CNN. Although Reynolds remained in the ICU at a Florida hospital as of Saturday evening, his rep told E! News that the actor’s “fever is down and we believe he should be taken out of ICU very soon.”

Reynolds’ mustache is so famous that it even has its own Facebook page with nearly 4,000 likes. Aware of the popularity of Reynolds’ mustache, the actor’s rep told E! News on Friday that doctors and nurses “are taking care of [Burt] and his mustache.” Burt’s rep said the actor will likely leave the Florida hospital on Monday.

“Get well sir… we need your class and style and oh.. that smirk… always makes me smile… God Bless and get back to the world,” one adoring fan wrote on one of the actor’s many fan pages.

According to IMDb, Reynolds is a Hollywood legend and universally-recognized sex symbol. IMDb notes that Reynolds began his career in TV westerns in the 1960s and eventually made his name as a male sex symbol in the 1970s and 1980s with the “Smokey and the Bandit” series and Woody Allen’s  “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask.” While his film roles became smaller in the 1990s, the veteran actor received an Oscar nomination in 1998 for his portrayal of porn producer Jack Horner in “Boogie Nights.”

Reynolds’ flu scare comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that the 2013 flu season is hitting adults 65 and older harder than usual (Burt is 76 years old.) According to the CDC, flu-related hospitalizations and deaths have risen sharply in recent weeks. The CDC is urging seniors to seek treatment for flu-like symptoms to avoid more serious outcomes.

“It’s not surprising to see severity indicators increasing at this point in the season because hospitalizations and deaths typically lag behind other flu activity indicators – but the increases are visually dramatic,” said CDC’s Dr. Lyn Finelli in a statement. “The overall picture is clear. This season is severe for seniors, who are being hit hardest in terms of serious illnesses and deaths. It’s really important that these people seek care and get treated promptly.”
