Reynolds is hospitalized in Florida with a severe case of the flu.
Burt Reynolds has been hospitalized in Florida with a severe case of the flu. The 76-year-old actor was admitted to intensive care for severe dehydration, according to various news reports.
His representative, Erik Kritzer, told CNN that Reynolds would like the name of the hospital to be kept private. Kritzer also gave an update on the health status of the Smokey and the Bandit star: “He is doing better at this time. We expect, as soon as he gets more fluids, he will be back in a regular room.”
Kritzer’s report to E! News was much more lighthearted with the PR rep saying: “They are taking care of him and his mustache.” Reynolds, a sex-symbol in the 1980s, is known for his iconic facial hair.
Reynolds’ is only one of many that have recently been hospitalized due to the flu. According to the Center of Disease Control, 6,191 people have been hospitalized for influenza between October 1, 2012 and January 19, 2013. Reynolds’ own age bracket, 65 and up, was hit the worst and accounted for many of this year’s hospitalizations.
Reynolds’ bout with the flu epidemic is not the only health issue he has experienced in the past few years. In 2009, the actor spent thirty days in a Florida rehab facility for a pill addiction he acquired after back surgery and in 2010, Reynolds had a quintuple bypass surgery performed on his heart.
Commenting on Reynolds’ rehab stint, Kritzer, told E! News that Reynolds’ “felt like he was going through hell and after a while, realized he was a prisoner of prescription pain pills. He checked himself into rehab in order to regain control of his life.”
Reynolds went public with his story to help inspire others going through similar issues. He hoped to encourage people to “not try to solve the problem[s] by themselves” and to realize that “sometimes it is too tough to do [it] on their own and [that] they should seek help, as he did.
Despite Reynolds’ many personal setbacks these past few years, his career has continued to flourish. The Hollywood Icon, known for his roles in Boogie Nights and Deliverance, has kept busy with multiple projects including starring in the movies Reel Love and Not Another Not Another Movie. He also lent his voice to the animated shows American Dad and Archer.
He has a new project, Standby, that has recently been announced. The film will also feature Emmanuel Chiriqui and Jason Alexander and is written and directed by Mark Fauser. Hopefully Reynolds, and his mustache, will enjoy a full recovery before production begins.
