Celebrity “swatting” is a phenomenon that appears to be increasing in popularity. The Kardashian-Jenner clan got a little bit of unwanted publicity Friday when their family home was swarmed by SWAT officers and medical personnel looking for a gunman after someone called 911 to report a shooter at the Kardashian family compound, reports Access Hollywood. Of course, no crime had actually taken place at the family’s Calabasas mansion.
Speaking out on Twitter, Kim Kardashian, perhaps the most well-known members of the Kardashian clan, ripped the prankster.
“Just got a call from my mom telling me about this prank call that someone was shot in their home & 15 swat team & 3 helicopters showed up!” Kim tweeted. “These prank calls are NOT funny! People can get arrested for this! I hope they find out who is behind this. It’s dangerous & not a joke!”
Kendall Jenner, Kim’s half sister and a brand ambassador for Seventeen Magazine, tweeted a sarcastic summary of the unnecessary prank.
“I love it when 8 police officers show up at my door and 10 cop cars are outside my house. Just another casual Friday evening at the Jenner household. #nbd #EveryonesOk” Kendall tweeted.
Bruce Jenner’s daughter also posted several photos of the police response to Instagram, including a picture of Bruce posing with heavily-armed police officers insider the family’s mansion.
“Kids are really stupid. You know you can get arrested for something like this? #pointless lol” she added.
The Kardashians may be an attention-hungry family, but the latest incident in a series of swatting pranks is cause for concern.
The Los Angeles Times defines swatting as a prank in which someone calls police to report a crime taking place, forcing police officers to respond, even though the report is actually fake. Unfortunately, several police officers have already been injured responding to swatting calls.
The Kardashian-Jenner family have now joined a growing list of celebrities who have fallen victim to swatting pranks. This list includes singer Justin Bieber and “X Factor” producer Simon Cowell. Back in October, a prankster reported a shooting at Bieber’s Calabasas mansion, causing heavily-armed police officers to rush to the scene. At the time, Bieber was away on tour.
“Swatting is a very real problem for those in the public eye,” Blair Berk, a criminal lawyer who has represented several celebrities, told the LA Times. “It is only a matter of time before someone dies because of this stupidity.”
Swatting is, of course, illegal and one person has already been arrested for swatting Bieber and Ashton Kutcher’s homes. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the alleged prankster was “a youngster.”
Access adds that Tom Cruise and Miley Cyrus have also fallen victim to swatting pranks.
What should the punishment be for someone who is caught swatting? Is more parental guidance needed to prevent additional swatting incidents? Sound off in the comments section.
