Will Armstrong make money?

It’s the latest twist in the Lance Armstrong sage.

It is being reported that Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams are making a movie about disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong.

The studio, in conjunction with Abrams’s Bad Robot company, are said to have secured right to the book Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong. The book, authored by Juliet Macur, represents one of the most definitive works on Armstrong’s doping scandal. A release date for the book has not yet been set.

The project is not the first to attempt to capture the drama and triumph of Armstrong’s career. An earlier project was said to be in the works, and Jake Gylenhall was reportedly set to play Armstrong. No word yet on who Abrams is considering for the role of the disgrace cyclist.

Macur, a reporter for the New York Times,  covered cycling and Armstrong for the Times from his recovery from cancer through his seven Tour de France victories to the inquiries surrounding his use of  performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).

The report comes as Armstrong has captured national attention for a worldwide interview with Oprah Winfrey in which he confesses running one of cycling’s most advanced  doping operations. The seven-time Tour de France winner had vehemently denied doping until now, although it was long suspected that his record-breaking rides were fueled by the use of drugs. He retired from the sport in 2011, and in 2012, was sanctioned by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for using and distributing PEDs.

Speaking with Oprah earlier this week, Armstrong admitted that he had used PEDs up until the year 2009, when he returned from retirement and took third place in the Tour. The former Tour winner earlier this year was eventually stripped of his titles, banned from cycling for life, and is facing lawsuits totaling tens of millions of dollars. Armstrong has already said he is preparing for the onslaught of criticism and legal problems that are likely to plague him for years to come.

That said, it remains clear if Armstrong will stand to benefit financially from the movie. Travis Tygart, the chief executive of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, and David Howman, the director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency, have already said they are unlikely to reconsider Armstrong’s ban from the sport, leaving the former Tour winner with few options in terms of earning income.

While a number of projects are likely to take place in between now and the release of the film, this is the first project to be confirmed since Armstrong confessed to using PEDs during the Winfrey interview.
