Al Roker: I ‘pooped my pants’ and went commando at the White House

Roker poops in his pants at the White House.

There are some secrets that are just too unsavory to tell, but Al Roker recently felt obliged to let us in on an embarassing incident that he had at the White House. Fair warning to those who may be eating, the following content may cause you to lose your dinner.

“When you have a bypass and your bowels [have] been reconstructed, you think you’re pretty safe,” NBC’s Roker told “Dateline” medical correspondent Nancy Snyderman in a video posted by TMZ.

Then he got graphic.

“And I probably went off and ate something I wasn’t supposed to. And as I’m walking to the press room […] I gotta pass a little gas here. I’m walking by myself. Who’s gonna know? Only a little something extra came out,” Roker explained.

“You pooped in your pants,” Snyderman with a serious expression on her face.

“I pooped my pants. Not horribly, but enough that I knew,” Roker added.

While embarassing, this sort of incident is a “common side effect of the surgery,” noted Snyderman.

However, the quick-thinking weatherman realized that he couldn’t walk around President Barack Obama’s house with poop in his pants.

“I was panicking, so I got to the restroom of the press room, threw out the underwear and just went commando,” he said.

Looking back on the unfortunate incident, Roker admitted that he learned a very valuable lesson.

“It told me that I’ve gotta be very vigilant as to what I eat,” he said.

The much-beloved weatherman underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2002. Prior to surgery, People reports that Roker consumed “Quarter Pounders in pairs and Krispy Kreme doughnuts by the half-dozen.” Eight months after his surgery, however, Roker had lost a third of his body weight because doctors had shrunk his football-size stomach to the size of an egg.

Turning to gastric bypass surgery was a last resort for Roker because he felt that giving in to surgery would be like admitting that he had a problem. The weatherman had struggled, however, to lose weight by trying out various diets.

“I’ve done ’em all,” he told People. “I did Atkins, Scarsdale, the Beverly Hills diet, the pineapple diet, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutri/System, Sugar Busters!, the Carbohydrate Addict’s diet. But because they are diets, you cannot stay on them forever.”

NBC’s weatherman recently talked with USA TODAY’s Craig Wilson about his struggle with obesity and his new memoir, “Never Goin’ Back: My Weight Loss Journey.” Roker admitted that there’s always a chance that he gains back some of his weight, but he’s confident that he’ll try everything he can to prevent that from happening.

“Look, you can never be sure of anything,” Roker said. “But I’m pretty sure about it now. I’ve pretty much stayed between 200 and 208. We’ve had some crises, personal and professional, and I’ve pretty much been able to toe the line. As best as I can say, I’m never going back.”

Is Roker’s “pooped my pants” at the White House story TMI or just an example of someone who’s willing to be open and honest with his viewers? Sound off in the comments section.
