Rihanna donates $1.75 million to hospital in memory of her grandmother.
Pop star Rihanna has reminded us all about the importance of giving to others during the holidays. The singer recently donated $1.75 million to a hospital in Barbados in memory of her late grandmother, Clara “Dolly” Braithwaite, who passed away in June.
“Goodbye #grangranDOLLY get your beauty rest until I see you,” Rihanna tweeted after the death of her grandmother.
The BBC reports that the 24-year-old’s gift will help with the purchase of three pieces of medical equipment. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s radiotherapy unit has also been renamed in honor of Rihanna’s grandmother. It’s now called the Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.
Rihanna reportedly visited the hospital Saturday with her mother and grandmother’s husband, Lionel.
“Me and grand pops in Barbados at the unveiling ceremony in memory of #granDolly at QEH,” the singer tweeted on Christmas eve, adding an Instagram photo of her and her grandmother’s husband.
While not everyone has the financial ability to donate millions of dollars, every good deed makes this world a better place.
“This was my way of giving back to Barbados, in a form of philanthropy, by assisting the QEH in its continued modernization program…I believe that this will have a huge impact on the people of Barbados,” Rihanna said in a statement to E! News. “This was all done to save lives or at least extend them.”
E! News also reports that the singer had her grandmother’s name tattooed across her chest shortly after “Dolly” lost her battle with cancer.
