NRA page goes dark after Newton school shooting.
Update: Since posting this article, the NRA has released a statement on the Newtown shooting. A link to the statement was provided on the organization’s Twitter page (@NRA).
The National Rifle Association’s (NRA) Facebook page has gone dark, according to NBCNews.com’s Technology blog. NBC News’ Suzanne Choney reports that the NRA’s main Facebook page is no longer accessible and that the organization’s Twitter page and Facebook page for the NRA blog have not been updated since December 14, 2012.
The date that the NRA’s social media networks stopped posting coincided with the day that Adam Lanza forever changed a community and a nation by killing 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty of the 26 people killed were children.
This is the NRA’s statement in its entirety:
“The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.
“Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.
“The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.
“The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.
“Details will be released to the media at the appropriate time.”
MyFOX8.com notes that after shootings in the past, such as the mall shooting in Oregon, the NRA has been quick to release a statement condemning the violence and supporting gun owners’ constitutional rights. While the organization’s silence until just a few hours ago appears to be out of respect for the victims Americans will not known until Friday, December 21, whether the NRA will propose any changes to the nation’s gun laws or simply defend every Americans’ right to bear arms.
Dick’s Sporting Goods made headlines Tuesday when it announced that it would suspend some rifle sales. In a statement on its corporate website, Dick’s said that it would be removing all guns from sale and from display cases in the store closest to Newtown and that it would be suspending the sale of rifles nationwide.
Here is the statement from Dick’s Sporting Goods:
“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.
“Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.
“We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy.”
Events for the movies “Django Unchained” and Tom Cruise’s “Jack Reacher” were also cancelled this week out of respect for the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.
