Man crushed to death by trash compactor.
A Texas man was crushed to death by a trash compactor Wednesday morning, according to the New York Daily News. Chad Adams, 41, fell asleep in a dumpster in Forth Worth, Texas, on Tuesday night, looking for a way to stay warm throughout the night.
NBCDFW reports that temperatures dropped into the 20s overnight Tuesday and Mr. Adams would have likely died of hypothermia if he had not found a place to bed down that night. The dumpster was reportedly located in the parking lot at East Lancaster Avenue and N. Hughes Avenue.
A friend of the victim told the Daily News that the Christmas season will be exceedingly difficult “without his presence and smile.”
According to NBCDFW, a garbage truck emptied the contents of the dumpster Wednesday morning into a trash compactor. The trash compactor started to do its job, making space for more trash, when the driver of the garbage truck heard Mr. Adams screaming. The driver disengaged the compactor and called 911.
Officials with MedStar told NBCDFW that paramedics performed CPR on Mr. Adams while moving him to a hospital, but the man later died at John Peter Smith Hospital despite undergoing surgery.
According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, Mr. Adams died when his pelvis was crushed. The death was ruled accidental.
Friends of the deceased individual will miss his generous spirit.
“He would give the shirt off his back to help anyone who needed it,” a friend told the Daily News.
According to The Associated Press, a memorial service has been planned for Mr. Adams. December 21, 2012, is known as National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day and Forth Worth homeless advocates are preparing to honor Mr. Adams’ life with a memorial service on that day. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that a daylight memorial at the Salvation Army and a candlelight service at Union Gospel Mission will be held in Mr. Adams’ honor.
The purpose of National Homeless Persons’ Memorial day is “to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember our homeless friends who have paid the ultimate price for our nation’s failure to end homelessness.”
The Daily News points out that this is not the first time that someone has fallen into a trash compactor. A Portland man, however, lived to tell his story. In August 2012, Justin Gilpatrick, 27, made the decision to sleep in a recycling bin after realizing that he was too drunk to drive.
“He knows he’s too drunk to drive so he decides not to, which is a great decision. Followed by a really bad decision – going to sleep in a dumpster that gets dumped into a truck,” Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau told KGW in August.
According to the report, Mr. Gilpatrick was compacted twice when the recycling truck dumped the contents of the recycling bin, including the drunk man, into his compactor. The Daily News notes that on a busier recycling night, Mr. Gilpatrick could easily have been killed.
