Mitt Romney is just like us.
Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is just like us. In the weeks following the 2012 presidential election, photographs of the multimillionaire pumping his own gas, visiting Disneyland and watching “Twilight” have gone viral.
Had he been elected to office, Mr. Romney would have been one of the richest men ever to work in the Oval Office. While the title of the wealthiest candidate ever goes to billionaire Ross Perot, the Michigan native’s $250 million fortune made him seem distant to the average American.
Now that he’s no longer campaigning for president, Governor Romney has time to do some of the things that many Americans would’ve been surprised to find him doing during the campaign.
“Mitt Romney at my local gas station,” Reddit user mkb95 wrote, adding a photo of Governor Romney pumping gas to the social news website. “He looks tired and washed up.”
Even though pumping gas, visiting Disneyland and watching “Twilight is about as American as one can be, attempting to do these things during the campaign may have backfired on the former Republican presidential nominee. Voters want a candidate to be one of them but Mr. Romney’s wealth could have made pictures of him pumping gas seem trite. Now that the race is over, Americans are glad to seem him acting normal.
The best way for Mr. Romney to appeal to the average American during his presidential campaign was to talk about the issues that mattered to them and not to alienate voters by making them feel unequal. Governor Romney, however, committed several political gaffes during the campaign that distanced himself from the average American.
During a GOP debate in Iowa last year, the Michigan native bet Texas Governor Ricky Perry $10,000 that he was right about his position on the individual mandate.
While the former Massachusetts governor committed several other costly gaffes throughout the campaign, his costliest mistake was revealed several months before the November 6 election. Mother Jones released underground footage of Governor Romney speaking to donors during a private fundraiser in September, sparking one of the most infamous phrases of the 2012 race: The “47 percent.”
“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it,” Mr. Romney was heard saying in the video.
Although the Romney campaign quickly dismissed the comments as “completely wrong,” the comments were used as evidence that the former Massachusetts governor was out of touch with the average American.
While pictures of Mr. Romney pumping gas, visiting Disneyland and watching “Twilight” have warmed the hearts of some of the candidate’s harshest critics, the likelihood that these images could have made a difference in the outcome of the presidential election is very low.
“If Romney had been able to use those pictures as a contrast to President Obama, it may have had some weight,” Jamie Chandler, a political scientist at Hunter College, told the New York Daily News. However, “Romney had a significant number of factors that kept him from winning.”
