President Obama, McKayla Maroney video goes super viral

Viral hit.

President Barack Obama was not impressed.

Mr. Obama met with 2012 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team on Thursday and mimicked gymnast McKayla Maroney’s “not impressed” look, creating a photo that went viral early Saturday.

The photo, which was released by the White House early Saturday, quickly made the rounds. A number of various news outlets posted the photo on social media sites, including Facebook and Twitter.  The photo, which shows Ms. Maroney with the president, was the idea of Mr. Obama, according to Ms. Maroney.

“He was the one who brought it up,” Maroney told The Associated Press. “We were about to leave and he said, ‘I want to talk to you one second about the face.’ He said, ‘I pretty much do that face at least once a day.’”

“I, like, freaked out,” Maroney said. “He said, ‘Let’s do it together.’ We took a picture and now it’s everywhere.”

The 2012 gymnastic star later commented on the photo, sharing it with followers.

“Did I just do the Not Impressed face with the President..?” Ms. Maroney tweeted.

During the medal ceremony Ms. Maroney was caught with the now-famous unimpressed face which quickly went viral sparking tumblrs and memes of  her face. The incident vaulted her to the national stage, which she said was a bit of a shock.

“Everything happens for a reason and you just have to turn it into something positive,” she said about the attention her expression received after the ceremony.

The U.S. Olympic team already visited the White House, but the team was unable to tour the Executive Mansion since they were on tour at the time. Ms. Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber were in Washington on Thursday performing in a show when the White House extended an invitation.

“He’s the coolest person I ever met,” Ms. Maroney said. “He’s got the hardest job in the entire world.”

The team took time to time to discuss life in a post-Olympic world. Speaking in an interview with the Washington Post, Ms. Douglas said the team remains close and that they continue to train.

“We’re all like sisters. We have to compete against each other, but we’re also competing for Team USA and our coaches and our gym, so we still want each other [to] do the best we can,” Ms. Douglas said, according to the Washington Post. “We all just love hanging out. Going to the mall. Going shopping. Relaxing in each other’s rooms. Going out to eat and watching TV with each other. We’re all normal 16 year olds…[ but] no dating. No time for boys just yet because everything is so crazy.”

The Fierce Five also got to watch President Obama depart from the South Lawn of the White House on the Marine One helicopter.

At the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, the women won the gold medal in the team all-around competition, and Raisman, the team’s captain, took home an additional gold and a bronze in individual competitions.
