Florida man kills himself after Obama victory.
A Florida man who reportedly told friends that he might hurt himself if President Barack Obama won re-election was found dead several days after the election of an apparent self-inflicted drug overdose.
The Miami Herald reported that Henry Hamilton, the owner of Tropical Tan, was discovered dead on November 8 with two empty prescription bottles nearby. The words “F—Obama!” were written on his will.
Mr. Hamilton was “very upset about the election results,” his partner Michael Cossey told Key West police. Prior to the election, Mr. Hamilton had told his partner, “if Barack gets re-elected, I’m not going to be around.”
Police said a cause of death is still awaiting autopsy results from the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office but they told The Miami Herald that “there’s absolutely no evidence of foul play.”
President Obama’s defeat of Governor Mitt Romney last Tuesday wasn’t the only reason behind Mr. Hamilton’s decision to take his own life, his partner said. Mr. Hamilton was “very stressed about his business” and hadn’t spoken to his friend since they “watched the election results” together.
According to the newspaper, one of Mr. Hamilton’s friend had a standing request to make welfare checks on the owner of Tropical Tan. When a Key West police officer went to make a welfare check on Mr. Hamilton, he found the business owner’s body in the bedroom of the Key West condo.
Another Key West police officer reportedly discovered empty Xanax and Seroquel bottles.
This is not the first ugly incident to be sparked by the re-election of President Obama. According to CBS affiliate KPHO, a pregnant Arizona woman ran over her husband for failing to vote in the 2012 presidential election Saturday.
Holly Solomon got into an argument with her husband over his decision not to vote in the presidential election. During the argument, the woman’s husband stepped out of the couple’s car and reportedly gave his wife a dirty look. In retaliation, Ms. Solomon began chasing her husband around a parking lot in their Jeep SUV.
“At one point he went behind a light pole so the vehicle wouldn’t strike him. He ended up leaving the light pole trying to run away to a different area,” said Sgt. Jesse Sanger with the Gilbert Police Department, according to the news outlet.
Ms. Solomon pinned her husband, Daniel Solomon, underneath the vehicle. Investigators told KPHO that his wife wanted to scare him but accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake.
“He got out of the car and she was screaming at him,” a witness said, according to KNXV. “And he started walking away and she started driving in circles around him. And she wouldn’t let him go, so finally he took off to try to get away, and she ran into him.”
According to abc15.com, Mr. Solomon told police that his wife “just hated Obama.”
Mr. Solomon was taken to the hospital in critical condition. His wife will face aggravated assault and reckless driving charges.
Henry Hamilton’s suicide and Holly Solomon’s vehicular assault against her husband are examples of extreme, and isolated, reactions to President Obama’s re-election.
