Monday Night Football: Ben Roethlisberger’s participation ‘questionable’ on Sunday

Big Ben sprained his right shoulder on Monday night.

The Monday Night Football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs brought both good news and bad news to the NFL’s best fans. Although the Monday Night Football game resulted in a victory for the Steelers, franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sprained his right shoulder during the third quarter of the team’s 16-13 overtime victory.

“It can be classified as a sternoclavicular sprain. That’s all the information that I have for you at this time,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a news conference Tuesday, according to The Baltimore Sun. “He’s been evaluated. Obviously, this injury puts his participation in the questionable category for this week. I’ll have more information for you guys as I get it as the week unfolds.”

The Steelers quarterback sustained a sternoclavicular sprain when Chiefs linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston slammed Big Ben into the ground during the Monday Night Football game.

According to an expert of sternoclavicular sprains, Mr. Roethlisberger could face as little as a few days of recovery to as much as 4-6 weeks of recovery.

”You could tape it, you could do that stuff but the reality is those ligaments just have to heal,” Dr. Victor Khabie, chief of sports medicine at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York, told The Associated Press. ”If you go throwing, you slow down the healing process.”

The next opponent for the Steelers will be the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens (7-2) have a one game lead on the Steelers (6-3) for the lead in the AFC North.

If Mr. Roethlisberger is unable to play in Sunday’s game due to the injury he sustained during the Monday Night Football match up, Steelers veteran Byron Leftwich would take his place. If Mr. Leftwich were to be hurt, veteran Charlie Batch would take the snaps.

“I’m not worried about the capabilities of either men if called upon,” Coach Tomlin said. “They’re proven veteran players. They’re capable performers. Whatever offense or personalities we choose to have, more than anything, if he is to play or either is to play, then obviously this week’s preparation will be big and having an opportunity to take snaps and prepare will be big.”

After a 7-of-14 performance for 73 yards Monday night, Mr. Leftwich is confident that he can take Big Ben’s place as the man behind center.

”I try to prepare as if I am the starter every week,” Mr. Leftwich said at the news conference. ”Nothing will change. I wish Ben the best. I hope he is healthy. Other than that I will be ready to go.”

Mr. Roethlisberger is just one player on a long list of Steelers who are injured. Safety Troy Polamalu, running back Rashard Mendenhall, wide receiver Antonio Brown, offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert and safety Ryan Clark are also questionable for Sunday’s game, reports The Baltimore Sun.
