Aubrey Plaza tried to upstage comedian Will Ferrell Sunday night at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. The actress walked up to the stage as Ferrell was giving his acceptance speech for the Comedic Genius Golden Popcorn award and attempted to steel the former SNL actor’s statue.

The “Anchorman” star kept a firm grasp on his award as Plaza tried to yank it from his hands. Though many people thought it was part of the show, MTV News said that the awkward bit wasn’t planned.

Plaza’s stage-crash immediately sparked comparisons to rapper Kanye West’s interruption of country star Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. After the incident, Plaza jokingly thanked West for the advice via Twitter.

Whether or not Plaza’s bit was inspired by West, the “Parks and Recreation Star’s” performance may have boosted the show’s ratings. Deadline.com reports that the MTV Movie Awards, which was hosted this year by Rebel Wilson, was watched by 3.8 million viewers, a significant increase from last year’s viewing audience of 3.2 million.

The title of Plaza’s new movie, “The To Do List,” was written on her chest when she walked on stage to steal Ferrell’s award. In any case, she may have just pulled off the best movie promotion bit in cinema history.

Despite the awkwardly funny nature of Plaza’s bit, MTV News reportedly asked the actress to leave the show shortly after she returned to her seat.

Speaking backstage, funnyman Ferrell told MTV news that Plaza came up to the stage with “a lot of hot liquor breath.” He also said that she brought a “little bit of sweat.”
