Jeb Bush hails charges against 6 Baltimore police officers, says ‘the process works’

Bush also said that people are "innocent until proven guilty" and encouraged people to show patience and trust in the legal process.

Former Florida governor and presumed Republican 2016 presidential nomination frontrunner has weighed in on the recent riots in Baltimore, saying that the arrest of the police officers allegedly involved in the death of Freddie Gray proves that the system works.

Bush said on Friday that he trusts in the legal process that ultimately led to six Baltimore officers being charged in the death of Gray, who had traumatic injuries to his spinal cord suffered while being detained by police, according to a SaintPetersBlog report.

However, he added that more needs ot be done to deal with distrust of police in neighborhoods, particularly in how “big pockets of poverty” are created, according to the report.

Bush said after the charges were announced that “the process works,” and that “people are innocent until proven guilty.”

He also faulted those who ignored the law and began to loot and riot, saying that there are “ways to protest peacefully,” and that when people cross the line and start causing damage and hurting innocent people, “that’s a problem.”

As far as whether or not he’ll declare his intentions to run for the GOP presidential nomination, he told dozens of supporters at North Carolina Republican Party headquarters in Raleigh that a decision is “not that far off.”

Baltimore’s chief prosecutor officially charged the officers on Friday, hitting them with charges ranging from murder to manslaughter in the death of Freddie Gray after days of peaceful protests and at times riots in Baltimore and other cities across the nation.

The protests have been so disruptive that it even led to a recent Baltimore Orioles game being played in an empty ballpark. Clashes between protesters and baseball fans were caught on video shortly after the movement began. It has led to authorities instituting a curfew and the movement has attracted national media attention.
