Box Office: ‘Insurgent’ likely to blast to No. 1 spot, post a $50 million weekend

The film is trailing the first film in the series, Divergent, which last year scored $54.6 million in its opening weekend.

“Insurgent” won’t pull in the $45 million in its open weekend that many had expected — in actuality, it’s going to eclipse $50 million, analysts now say.

Insurgent, the next film in the Divergent series, still trails last year’s “Divergent” but is expected to post a strong weekend, although it will fall short of initial estimates of $60 million, according to a Variety report.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have much competition, and Sean Penn’s “The Gunman” is likely to place a distant second.

Insurgent pulled in $21.3 million at the box office on Friday, just $1.5 million off the pace that was set by Divergent last year when it opened at No. 1 with $54.6 million and eventually pulling in $151 million at the box office, and $288.7 million worldwide.

Shailene Woodley’s star power and the appeal of the book trilogy, which was penned by Veronica Roth for young adults, should help it do quite well overseas. It enjoyed $18.3 million in box office receipts internationally on Friday, including strong showings in France, the U.K., Brazil, and Australia.

It is playing on 9,500 screens in 76 markets, which is the largest international rollout of the year, according to the report.

Insurgent has an additional advantage going for it: it’s being released in 3D and Imax, something that Divergent didn’t have. But it may have come at a price: it cost $110 million to make the film, which is $25 million more expensive than Divergent.

Insurgent is a dystopian film that features the main characters fleeing from the Erudites in search of allies in the ruins of Chicago. Two more films are expected to debut at the same time in 2016 and in 2017.
