Netflix launches in Cuba

Netflix on Monday launched its streaming service in Cuba.

Just this morning, Netflix launched its streaming service in Cuba. It will be available for $8 a month to residents with credit cards and access to high-speed internet.

The library of content available to the Cubans will include House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, along with other original and licenses programs and movies.

This expansion won’t increase Netflix’s profits significantly, as only five percent of the Cuban population has access to fixed broadband according to World Bank. This does show Netflix’s commitment to expanding globally, even in countries with poor infrastructure.

Netflix is in the process of a massive global expansion as they are racing the likes of Amazon, cable providers and google for global audiences. This comes as no surprise as Netflix’s U.S. subscriber growth slows.

“We are delighted to finally be able to offer Netflix to the people of Cuba, connecting them with stories they will love from all over the world,” said Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings. “Cuba has great filmmakers and a robust arts culture and one day we hope to be able to bring their work to our global audience of over 57 million members.”
