Tampa mom delivers huge 14.1-pound baby, largest in 30 years at her hospital

The hospital initially expected he would be in the 10 pound range, which would have been normal and about the same as the mother's previous two children -- but they were in for a surprise.

A Tampa Bay mother gave birth to a huge baby — 14.1 pounds to be exact, the largest baby in 30 years at the St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital where he was born.

The child, Avery Denton, has already lost a pound since his Jan. 29 birth to Maxxandra Ford due to natural fluid loss, but his size still stood out and his demands for food were off the charts: 4 ounces every three hours, twice that for a typical newborn, according to a Tampa Bay Times report.

The 26-year-old Ford said she didn’t know she was even pregnant until she was 35 weeks in as her jeans and scrubs got tighter (she works at the hospital as a patient support technician).

It took 18 hours of labor, but in 20 minutes she was able to deliver the child naturally. Ultrasound had pegged the child at just over 10 pounds, a number she knew was off when she began giving birth to him.

Ford said she was “cussing up a storm” during the birth, according to the report, but she pushed ahead. A registered nurse at the hospital said they probably would not have gone ahead with vaginal birth had they known the child was as heavy as he was.

His height was normal at 22 inches. His weight prompted the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit to hold him for observation as a child born that size can have complications, and indeed he had breathing problems at first. The hospital thinks he should be able to go home in just a few days.

Avery was growing to such a large size that Ford at first assumed she was having twins — natural to assume, as Ford is a twin herself.

Ford said she was happy with her baby, saying the she “loved” that he was “so squishy.”

Ford has two other children: 1-year-old Aleckxander and 6-year-old Jackxine, who were both born at around 10 pounds, which is a normal weight.
