Will Smith, Jimmy Fallon recreate ’80s hit ‘It Takes Two’ on iPad app

Smith puts out new music for the first time since 2005's 'Lost and Found.'

Jimmy Fallon celebrated the return of The Tonight Show to Los Angeles on Monday by recreating Will Smith’s infamous The Fresh Prince of Bel Air opening, and the late-night talk show host invited the Fresh Prince himself to his studio Thursday night to continue his nostalgic look back into the past. Fallon and Smith used an iPad app on the show to create their own version of Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock’s late ’80s hit “It Takes Two,” making it the first time since 2005’s Lost and Found that Smith has put out new music.

Fallon proved that he was able to create impressively fine music on an iPad last year, when he tested the app by recording a doo-wop cover of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” with Billy Joel. While his “It Takes Two” cover with Smith is less likely to climb to the top of any charts, fans still appreciated Smith’s momentary return to the music world.

“You’re a famous rapper, and I’m a classically trained beatboxer, so I want to try something fun with you here,” Fallon told Smith, as he pulled out the iPad app which loops vocal tracks.

The duo began to build the song out of a number of layered sounds, and eventually took the show to the main stage so house band The Roots could turn the song into a full-on jam.

Fallon’s performance with Smith helped the host remain one of the top trending topics on social media, which he started being after his epic lip sync battle with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart last Sunday. The battle went viral thanks to Ferrell’s emotional performance of Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love,” during which the Stepbrothers star tried mimicking some of the singer’s dance moves from the music video for the song. Viewers also loved when Fallon got Sam Smith, Carrie Underwood, Ariana Grande and One Direction to participate in a Brady Bunch-style a cappella version of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” that night, and his Tuesday night impersonation of Neil Young while singing his hit song “Old Man” alongside Young himself was also a hit with The Tonight Show fans. On Wednesday night’s show, Fallon set social media afire when he reunited the cast of Saved by the Bell for a skit.
