Survey Monkey CEO dies in gym after severe head injury

David Goldberg, husband of Sheryl Sandberg and CEO of Survey Monkey, passed away last Friday after a suffering a severe head injury at the gym while on vacation in Mexico, according to a source close to the family.

Goldberg, 47, was on vacation with family and friends at the Four Seasons Resorts Punta Mita near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Sources stated that Goldberg went to the resort gym around 4PM on Friday and when he didn’t return his family members went in search of him. He was found alive by his brother Robert lying on the ground by the treadmill.

Goldberg had fallen and hit his head while working out leaving a head wound of around 3-mm wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital in Nuevo Vallarta where he died of severe head trauma and blood loss.

Goldberg was beloved and known in Silicon Valley as a talented entrepreneur, having worked at Yahoo and a venture capitalist firm before becoming CEO of web survey company, Survey Monkey. He was also a father of two children with wife, Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook and author of best selling book Lean In. Sandberg has yet to make a public statement about her husbands death.

Private services will be held on Tuesday.  According to the New York Times, all men who attend the service are asked not to wear times to “in keeping with Dave’s lifelong hatred of ties.”

Disney will postpone their quarterly earnings report so that employees may attend the services. Sandberg is a member of the Disney board.
