‘Suge’ Knight murder trial interrupted for third time by medical emergency

Marion “Suge” Knight is currently on trial for the death of 55-year-old Terry Carter during a confrontation at a Compton burger stand in January, but the former rap mogul’s health complications have removed him from courthouses three times since he was charged with murder. Knight told the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday that he is suffering from blindness and other serious health issues, and was taken to a hospital before he was able to enter a new courtroom.

Knight is accused of murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run charges after striking two men with his truck on Jan. 29. After pleading not guilty on Monday morning, the Death Row Records co-founder revealed that he has fired his lawyer and complained to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Brandlin that he has been receiving inadequate medical treatment while in custody. Knight said he was blind in one eye and had only about 15 percent vision in his other eye, and that these conditions have made it difficult for him to comprehend the proceedings. He also revealed that he had been shot six times last year and had a blood clot in his lungs, and that these injuries caused him to lose 35 pounds.

Knight’s complaints were frequently silenced by Brandlin, who admonished him not to interrupt until he concluded the proceedings, causing Knight to mutter an expletive. Brandlin then transferred Knight’s case to Judge Ronald Coen, but the former rap mogul was taken to the hospital for medical care before his case could be called into the new courtroom.

Despite the change in judge, Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Barnes repeated a previous statement on Monday that she plans to introduce evidence of several crimes Knight was never charged with during the next bail hearing. Coen ordered another hearing for Knight on March 9, although a bail hearing may might not take place until March 20.
