David Crosby’s car hits jogger

Police say that a car driven by singer-songwriter David Crosby hit a jogger Sunday evening near his residence in Santa Ynez, California. The California Highway Patrol released the recordings of two 911 emergency phone calls in which the caller – apparently a distraught Crosby – tells the 911 dispatcher that he hit someone and pleads for medical assistance. “We need an ambulance right now,” he said.

The phone operator tells him the highway patrol is on the way and asks the caller if the person is walking. The caller says he didn’t see the man because of the setting sun and again worries about medical assistance.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), David Crosby was driving about 50 miles per hour (mph) when the jogger was struck. The speed limit is posted in the area as 55 mph. The jogger has been identified as Jose LuQuin Jimenez and was last reported in fair condition by Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The CHP spokesman, Don Clotworthy, earlier had said Jimenez has sustained multiple fractures.

The Hall of Fame musician has had a host of health and drug problems through much of his life, including a liver transplant in 1994. He was arrested ten years later on illegal possession of about one ounce of marijuana he apparently left behind in luggage in a hotel room. Crosby was arrested upon returning to the hotel to retrieve his bag.  He has also had entanglements with cocaine and heroin.

Clotworthy noted that Crosby was cooperative and “he was not impaired or intoxicated in any way.” He said that, although, pedestrians (including joggers) are supposed to be on the left side of the road walking toward traffic, Jimenenz was on the right.

David Crosby first achieved fame in 1965, when he and has band, The Byrds, has a massive hit with a cover of Bob Dylan’s Mr. Tambourine Man. In 1969, the first album of the band Crosby, Still & Nash included “Guinnevere,” “Wooden Ships” and “Helpelessly Hoping”.
