Twitter trying new procedures to cut down on abuse

Recently the CEO of Twitter spoke out about how the company is not particularly good at dealing with trolls and abuse on the social media platform, but it looks like they are moving in the right direction.

The company has tripled the size of the support team that is employed to deal with such antics, which means that they will be able to respond faster when incidents are reported or even sometimes catch them as they are occurring.

Impersonation accounts are a common issue on the platform, and changes are being made in how these are dealt with as well. In the past it required reports from the impersonated party, but now they are extending the acceptance to bystander reports where people who are witnessing the impersonation can file an effective report as well.

There will also be some new ways of enforcing behavior when it goes against the rules that Twitter currently has in place.

Twitter’s Tina Bhatnagar spoke out about the changes and their impact.

“These investments in tools and people allow us to handle more reports of abuse with greater efficiency. So while we review many more reports than ever before, we’ve been able to significantly reduce the average response time to a fraction of what it was, and we see this number continuing to drop,” she said.

CEO Dick Costelo has not been shy about discussing the issues that Twitter faces. He was particularly candid in a leaked letter that was sent out to employees about the issue.

“It’s no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day,” he said.

Clearly Twitter is taking abuse seriously and seems to be moving in the appropriate direction to handle it more effectively in the future.
