Exploding Cats card game overwhelms Kickstarter

Exploding Kittens has set the record for most-backed Kickstarter campaign of all time.

“Exploding Kittens” — a tabletop card game that Wired described as  “essentially Russian Roulette with cats” — wrapped up its Kickstarter campaign Thursday night having set the record for most-backed campaign in Kickstarter history.

When all was said and done, Exploding Kittens raised more than $8.7 million from more than 200,000 individuals. The donations had blown past the initial goal of $10,000.

“Until Exploding Kittens came along, we hadn’t seen the Internet at large descend on a project and embrace it at this crazy scale,” Kickstarter’s Luke Crane told Wired.

The previous record for most-backed campaign was held by Levar Burton’s Reading Rainbow revival project from this past summer. Burton brought in over 100,000 backers. In the end, Exploding Kittens doubled that number.

With nearly $8.8 million raised, Exploding Kittens becomes the highest funded game project and the third highest funded project of any kind on Kickstarter.

“We’ve never seen anything like you guys, and neither has the planet,” said Elan Lee, the Exploding Kittens game creator, on his now-closed Kickstarter page. “You have proven beyond any doubt that you are unstoppable. There’s nothing we can put in front of you that you can’t do.”

According to the game’s description on Kickstater, it works by having players “take turns drawing cards until someone draws an exploding kitten and loses the game.” It is “a card game for people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats.”

Sounds like fun.
