‘Selma’ director Ave DuVernay re-teams with David Oyelowo for Hurricane Katrina project

First MLK, now will tackle the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

It looks like Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo are looking to reignite the magic that was Selma, as they re-team for a movie about the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Although Selma was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, both the actor and director were snubbed for individual nominations in their respective categories.

Hurricane Kastrina was the costliest disaster in U.S. History, was one of the top five most deadly hurricanes, and was the seventh most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded.

At least 1,833 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods and caused around$108 billion in total property damage.

This film will be taking a look into how the hurricane devastated the African American communities in New Orleans and beyond.

DuVernay will not only be directing the feature, but will also be helming the script and will produce the film.  Participant Media’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King will serve as executive producers on the new film.

Jonathan King had this to say, “Hurricane Katrina is one of the most important social and environmental stories of our time. Ava DuVernay has shown herself to be highly skilled at bringing intimacy and contemporary urgency to epic events. We have been looking for the right way to get back in business with Ava, and with David Oyelowo, and are proud to reteam with them on her original idea, which we believe will be a powerful film.”
