Madonna is one of the most famous musicians in the world, so you would think that she shouldn’t have trouble promoting her albums without having to go overboard. But the artist that has sold more than 300 million records worldwide went with an unconventional way of promoting her latest album, and it is causing quite the stir.

In an effort to promote her 13th studio album entitled Rebel Hearts, Madonna is comparing herself to some very influential figures. Two of the figures that she is comparing herself to are Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. Madonna is doing the comparisons by altering pictures of famous people to have lines drawn on their faces to replicate her album cover. As you would expect, Madonna’s promoting decision has caused a big controversy in the world of social media.

Madonna accompanied the altered pictures of King and Mandela with captions comparing herself to the two figures. The caption to go along with the Martin Luther King Jr. picture read, “This #rebelheart had a dream!,” while the caption to go along with the Nelson Mandela photo read, “This #rebelheart fought for freedom!”

Now King and Mandela weren’t the only historical figures that Madonna used to promote her album. She also used pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Bob Marley. But those pictures weren’t met with anywhere near the same backlash as the photos of King and Mandela. Despite the negative attention though, Madonna has not removed the pictures from her Instagram account.

This isn’t Madonna’s first brush with controversy as it regards to social media. Last year, she had to apologize for calling her son the N word via a post on her Instagram.

Madonna’s album is scheduled for release on March 10th.
