‘Saved By the Bell’ star Dustin Diamond arrested after bar fight

Actor Dustin Diamond, better known as Screech from the 1990s sitcom Saved By the Bell, was arrested early Friday in Wisconsin. The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department stated that Diamond allegedly stabbed a man after an altercation in Port Washington at a local bar.

The actor, 37, had a switchblade upon the time of his arrest. Police said that Diamond was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, disorderly conduct and for second-degree reckless endangerment.

Police said that officers responded to a call from the Grand Ave. Saloon claiming a 37-year-old man had “stabbed another male patron” and proceeded to leave the bar around 11:15 p.m. Later, police found a knife–a stiletto folding knife with a 3.75-inch blade — in the car in which Diamond was riding in early Friday, according to ABC News.

ABC News reported that documents from the district attorney’s office confirmed Diamond’s identity. He was charged on three counts after his court appearance Friday. The documents state that he could be facing up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted of the recklessly endangering safety charge.

According to police, Diamond’s girlfriend, 27, was also arrested, but she was released after being charged with disorderly conduct. Diamond’s girlfriend was driving a white SUV and Diamond riding with her at the time of the arrests.

Diamond claimed that there was a group of people at the bar who were intoxicated and were “insulting,” according to police. Diamond said that he saw his girlfriend bleeding after she had an altercation with another woman at the bar. As a result, he intervened and did not intend to stab the man.

He said that “people were grabbing at him” and it was chaotic, according to a report by the DA. Diamond’s answers were not consistent during questioning. He switched between claiming he was holding a knife and holding a pen during the spat.

Police spoke to witnesses, including the victim and the bartender, while at the bar. There was a “significant amount” of bleeding surrounding the half-inch stab wound, police said. However, the victim did not suffer any serious injuries and claimed that he never saw the knife.

Diamond appeared in the Ozaukee County court on Friday where bail was set at $10,000. Authorities said he had not yet entered a plea. The Associated Press reported that Diamond’s next hearing is set for Monday.

The former child star, who played an awkward nerd on the show, has not been a stranger to controversy since his career ended. In 2006, he released and directed his own sex tape. And in 2009, he published a book about his time as a Saved By the Bell star. He described the cast to be sex-crazed and hard-partying teenagers. The cast members had only negative criticisms of Diamond’s book. They disputed his descriptions of the cast off of the screen.

In 2013, he tried distancing himself from the book. He said that the book was disappointing and had been written by a ghostwriter. Recently, this book was turned into a movie that appeared on Lifetime TV.
