The money will also go to improvements in fisheries enforcement, supporting four conservation groups that are working together to strengthen illegal fishing controls in the European Union.

The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has provided $2 million to Oceans 5, a dedicated collaboration of international funders whose mission is to stop overfishing and increase reserves in the planet’s five oceans.

Some of the funds will help support foundations involved in the creation of large protected areas in the Arctic and the Pacific Islands, like a local organization in the Republic of Kiribati, working to implement the world’s fourth largest marine reserve, located in the Central Pacific.

The money will also go to improvements in fisheries enforcement, supporting four conservation groups that are working together to strengthen illegal fishing controls in the European Union, the world’s largest fish market.

“Oceans 5 is an exciting new platform for marine conservation. Working together with other philanthropists, we are making smarter, more impactful investments for the future of our planet,” said Leonardo DiCaprio, “The sad truth is that less than two percent of our oceans are fully protected. We need to change that now.”

DiCaprio was recently named the United Nations’ Messenger of Peace by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, calling him “a new voice for climate advocacy.”

Soon after, the secretary and DiCaprio both took part in the 400,000-strong People’s Climate March in New York City. DiCaprio also spoke at the UN Climate Summit in September:

“We need to put a pricetag on carbon emissions, and eliminate government subsidies for oil, coal and gas companies. We need to end the free ride that industrial polluters have been given in the name of a free-market economy, they do not deserve our tax dollars, they deserve our scrutiny. For the economy itself will die if our eco-systems collapse.”
