Jon Hamm still peeved over being forced to turn down lead role in ‘Gone Girl’

Source claims that Hamm is upset with 'Mad Men' creator Matt Weiner for keeping him from claiming male lead in David Fincher's hit film 'Gone Girl.'

With Mad Men’s final season premiering next month, Jon Hamm has been in need of another breakout role to keep up the momentum in his career. The 44-year-old actor was up for Ben Affleck’s leading role in David Fincher’s highly-successful 2014 film Gone Girl, and sources say Hamm is still upset that contractual obligations to his hit AMC series forced him to miss out on the major opportunity.

Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel earned $368 million worldwide, and stars Rosamund Pike and Affleck earned rave reviews for their roles in the film. While Hamm was considered for the male lead, Nick Dunne, sources told Page Six on Monday that Mad Men creator Matt Weiner wouldn’t let Hamm out of his contractual obligations to the series. The shooting schedule for the AMC drama conflicted with that of Gone Girl, so while it’s understandable that Weiner didn’t want to lose his show’s star, the role would have helped Hamm ensure he maintains a career after Mad Men is over.

According to the source, Hamm is incredibly upset about having to pass on “such a visible role” during his career peak. While he has managed to keep any bad blood with Weiner under wraps during their recent press appearances together, Hamm made his career concerns known to GQ in the magazine’s April cover story.

“The one constant thing I’ve had in my career is now removed. And that’s an eye-opener,” said Hamm. “Are people still going to take me seriously? Am I just going to do romantic comedies for the rest of my life? What’s next?”
