Womans find massive 8.52-carat diamond in Arkansas

The Colorado woman was poking around in the Crater of Diamonds State Park when she stumbled upon a stunning find.

A Colorado woman who was exploring the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas on Wednesday came across an amazing find: an 8.52-carat diamond.

Bobbie Oskarson was poking around in the park for about 20 minutes when she suddenly dug up a huge diamond, and named it the “Esperanza Diamond,” according to a TIME report.

It’s the fifth largest diamond ever discovered at the park by a visitor since it was established back in 1972. The diamond was about three-quarters of an inch long, and about as thick as a pencil.

Oskarson is naming it the Esperanza Diamond in honor of her niece, and the fact that it means “hope” in Spanish.

The diamond was found in what is called the Pig Pen because of how muddy it is.

Oskarson has no plans to part with her prize.

Crater of Diamonds State Park is a 911-acre park located in Pike County, which is situated in southwestern Arkansas. Included in the park is a 37.5-acre plowed field where visitors flock to look for diamonds, and it is the world’s only diamond site that the public has access to.

One of the finds there was the Strawn-Wagner Diamond, which is one of the most perfect diamonds in the world. The 3.09-carat diamond was discovered by an Arkansas resident in 1990 in the public search field of the park. It was eventually cut down to 1.09 carats in 1997 and was given a perfect score from the American Gem Society of 0/0/0. It has been called a one-in-a-billion diamond, and it was purchased by the park for $34,700.
