Big snowstorm targeting New England; residents still digging out from last blizzard

Residents are still trying to dig out of last month's blizzard, and the new snowfall is expected to be accompanied by freezing temperatures.

Get ready, New England: another round of snowstorms is set to pummel the region again int he coming days.

The Northeast, already buried under snow that measured three feet in some places late last month, had snow flurries on Saturday and is expected to have several days of heavy snowfall coming up, according to an Associated Press report.

The National Weather Service posted a winter storm warning at 10 p.m., and it will remain in effect for much of southern New England, including the cities of Boston, Providence, and Hartford, until as late as early Tuesday.

Light snow had already begun falling in Boston on Saturday, but things are expected to pick up on Sunday, and by Monday night more than a foot of snow will have fallen on parts of the region, forecasters say.

The snow will mean commuting problems in the region on Monday, although it may not accumulate as quickly as it did with the January blizzard, and coastal flooding isn’t likely to be a problem this time around.

There are questions on how Boston’s transit system will handle the new snowfall, as it is already struggling from the blizzard that struck last month. Snow and ice on the tracks have caused delays for its trains. Authorities blamed the problems on old equipment.

If that isn’t bad enough for the snowstorm, weather forecasters are also calling for potentially record cold temperatures in the region later in the week after the storm hits, meaning that the snow will be sticking around for quite a while.

The blizzard that struck in late January spared New York City but slammed New England with up to three feet of snow in some areas.
