President Obama’s approval rating soars to 46.4% — highest jump since he got re-elected

It's still a far cry from the 63 percent he enjoyed after being elected in 2009, but it shows a dramatic recovery from his dismal 2014 numbers as the economy bounces back.

President Barack Obama’s job approval is soaring as of late, posting its best mark since mid-2013, based on new data from a Gallup poll that was released yesterday.

His job approval rating average 46.4 percent in the 25th quarter of a presidency stretching back to January 2009, a 3-percent boost since last quarter that marked the second-highest quarterly rise in his entire presidency, second only to the 4-point boost he got after winning his 2012 re-election campaign, according to a Huffington Post report.

It appears that Obama’s approval ratings are bouncing back from a tough 2014 when he endured some of the worst approval ratings that he has seen in his time in office. It’s not quite enough to get it back to the high of 63 percent he achieved when he took the reins in 2009, and Gallup placed it in the middle range of where you might expect a president’s approval rating to be at in the 25th quarter.

So why the big increase? Most likely, a drop in gasoline prices in 2014 and a surging job market has helped people feel better about the economy and consequently about the leadership in charge. His diplomatic activities involving Ukraine, Iran, and Cuba appear to have bolstered his image as well, according to the report. His numbers may also been bolstered by improving perceptions of Obamacare, which were at a low during its botched rollout in November 2013. About 43 percent now approve of the law, up nine points since then.

A CNN/ORC poll that was also released yesterday echoes Gallop’s findings, showing Obama’s approval rating at its highest in two years.

For the survey, Gallup contacted 44,083 adults via landline and cell phones. It was conducted Jan. 20 through April 19.
