Amazing new Tesla invention: A wall-mounted battery that will power your home

Tesla's massive economies of scale in the battery market due to its electric cars allows it to drive down the price.

Not content with pioneering in the world of electric automobiles with Tesla and commercial rocket launches with SpaceX, CEO Elon Musk has unveiled the first in a line of stand-alone batteries that will able to store renewable energy and can be used to power your home or business.

Although batteries like this have been created before, Tesla’s work in the car industry has allowed it to create the necessary production scale to bring down the cost for parts that are needed for these batteries, making them much more cost-competitive than those of other companies, according to media reports.

The company is also planning to build something known as the Gigafactory, which is 10 million square feet and will give the company massive amounts of space to construct these batteries.

That doesn’t mean it’s cheap: it comes in at about $3,000 to $3,500 for installers. However, the Powerwall, as it is being called, could be worth the money, as it is rechargeable and boasts a seven to 10 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery.

It’s fairly sizeable, at three by four feet in surface area and seven inches in thickness, but it’s still small enough to fit on your wall.

In addition, Tesla is looking at releasing a battery called the Powerpack, which is targeted a businesses and should be available later this year. The Powerwall is available now and can be purchased online, although it will take up to four months for delivery.

Of course, Tesla may be fighting against commoditization: most market analysts believe that while there is much more work to do to develop batteries, the market will soon become commoditized, much as the solar panel business has. Still, this is a bet Musk believes he can win at least in the short term, and it could have longer-term implications for future endeavors.
