Woman and toddler slain in trailer park shooting, gunman still at large

Gunman kills small child for no apparent reason

Gunshots were fired just after two in the morning Saturday at Kariotis Mobile Home Park in Bremerton, Washington.

The mother of two-year-old Kaden Lum tried to shield the boy from the bullets but was unsuccessful. He was airlifted to a Seattle Hospital where surgeons tried their best to save the child. In died within a few hours of being shot.

The mother was unharmed. She claims to have no idea who the shooter was. The other victim was a roommate of hers named Heather Kelso. She was declared dead at the scene.

Although Kelso had lived in the trailer park for three years, Kaden and his mother (whose identity is not being released) had only moved in three weeks ago.

A visiting neighbor was also shot while running back to his residence. The man sustained life-threatening injuries in the lower abdomen and was also airlifted to a Seattle hospital.

“There’s evidence to indicate it’s not a random attack, but I don’t know what the connection is,” said Kitsap County Sheriff’s Lt. Detective Earl Smith.

When reporters questioned the sheriff about why anyone would shoot a small child, Smith replied “That’s the million-dollar question.”

The mobile home park was searched by an investigative team and canine unit. However, the shooter’s trail could not be picked up. Police officers have obtained warrants to search the nearby homes.

“We feel confident the suspect is no longer in the mobile home park,” said Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ken Dickinson.
