San Francisco police detain man after finding body parts in suitcase

Police said the man had been spotted in surveillance footage in the general area outside of the store where the remains were found, and that they had also detained a second suspect in the case.

Police have detained what they are calling a “person of interest” after human remains were found in a suitcase.

After distributing photos of a man to the surrounding community, officers were called to an apartment building in the Tenderloin neighborhood Friday evening by an anonymous tipster, according to police as report by SFGate.com.

Authorities cautioned that the man had not necessarily committed a crime — only that video footage caught him in the general area outside of a Goodwill’s As-Is-Store. Police said he was cooperating with detectives who were questioning him, and declined to give his name.

A second person was also detained in the case, but his connection was not revealed by authorities.

The body parts were discovered inside the suitcase on Wednesday afternoon between Mission and Market streets after a pedestrian notified police of the package. It had severed appendages along with mixed garbage and debris near the store’s entrance.

Police distributed photos of a man wearing a striped baseball cap, light blue jeans, and a blue and orange jacket, and were able to track him down just hours later.

Authorities had shut down 11th Street in order to canvas the area, which is when they discovered more body parts in the area.

The San Francisco medical examiner could only identify the parts as from a “light-skinned male,” but nothing else is yet known about the victim.

Police said that they could not be sure if all the remains were from one person or if they were from multiple individuals.
