Fun in the sun: Tulsa deputy who killed unarmed man is off to the Bahamas

Robert Bates, accused of accidentally shooting to death unarmed Eric Harris after mistaking his gun for a taser, has gotten permission for some family fun at the exotic island nation as he faces manslaughter charges.

A 73-year-old reserve sheriff’s deputy in Oklahoma accused of gunning down an unarmed man after confusing his taser with a pistol is off to the Bahamas for some fun in the sun after a judge granted him permission to leave for family vacation as he awaits his manslaughter trial.

Robert Bates, a wealthy man who has contributed thousands of dollars worth of vehicles and equipment to the sheriff’s office as well as money to the sheriff’s reelection campaign, was given approval to back up officers in a sting when he allegedly mistook his gun for a taser, killing Eric Harris, according to a CNN report.

Bates has pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter and faces a preliminary hearing on July 2. However, his troubles aren’t keeping him from attempting to enjoy some time in the Bahamas with his family, a decision that prompted outrage from the family of Harris.

“Mr. Bates’ vacationing in the Bahamas at this time sends a message of apathy with respect to the shooting and Eric’s life,” the family said according to the report. They went on to say that while they will be mourning Harris’ death, “Mr. Bates will be relaxing and enjoying his wealth and privilege.”

Clark Brewster, one of Bates’ lawyers, said the break would give them an opportunity to deal with the facts in the courtroom rather than in the press.

The fatal altercation happened April 2 while Harris was being chased down by deputies in a weapons sting operation, which was caught on video. Harris is tackled and then Bates can be heard shouting “Taser” before a shot rings out, followed by Bates saying, “I shot him. I’m sorry.”

The lawyer for Harris’ family alleges that Bates was allowed to play cop even though he wasn’t qualified because he had donated money and equipment to the sheriff, and was a friend of his.
