Bill Cosby’s lawyer lashes out, blasts leak of documents as ’embarrassing’

Cosby's lawyer slammed the proposed unsealing of court documents on a 2005 sexual assault case against the embattled comedian.

Bill Cosby’s lawyer is fighting a proposal to unseal documents from a 2005 sexual assault lawsuit that was settled as “terribly embarrassing” should it happen.

Cosby, who is facing accusations from scores of women who claim that for decades he drugged and raped women at will, was accused in the 2005 lawsuit of doing the same thing to a woman at his home, a case that was settled under confidential terms, according to an Associated Press report.

The woman was a former employee of Temple University. Cosby’s lawyer said that if his client’s deposition was released, it would revealed intimate details of the comedian’s marriage and sex life, as well as his use of prescription drugs.

It would be “terribly embarrassing” if these details were released, said George M. Gowen III, the lawyer representing Cosby. Therefore, the public should not be able to view this information, which Cosby had no choice but to provide due to the accusations.

So far, more than a dozen women have stepped forward in recent years to accuse Cosby of sexually assaulting them, ranging from cases just a few years old to ones that allegedly happened decades ago as Cosby was approaching his peak of stardom.

The women are accusing Cosby of defamation by claiming that their accusations are not true, but Cosby is trying to keep the case from advancing to discovery when embarrassing details could emerge. He so far has not been charged with any crime.

Lawyers from the opposition claim that Cosby is a public figure and thus shouldn’t have as a high a degree of privacy as others. Cosby must show cause as to why the seal shouldn’t be lifted after two years since the case was settled.
