Ringo Starr shares his thoughts on One Direction: ‘They’re singing boys who dance’

"They’re not really a band are they?" Starr asked his interviewer. "They’re singing boys who dance. One Direction is going in another direction.”

Today, ex-Beatles drummer Ringo Starr is releasing a new solo album, titled Postcards from Paradise. Next month, he will be inducted into to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. Needless to say, Starr has not been this headline-worthy in years. All of the buzz has led to a press tour with several interviews – a rarity for the aging pop star, and according to the Irish Examiner, at least one of those interviews broached the subject of One Direction.

While hardly an authority on the modern pop landscape, Starr does know what it’s like to inspire mass hysterical fandom as a member of the world’s biggest boy band. As a result, he was asked about One Direction and about last week’s social-media-breaking announcement that Zayn Malik would be departing the group in pursuit of a more private life.

“He must have all his own good reasons for it,” Starr said, referring to Malik’s decision to leave one of the most popular musical groups on the planet. “I don’t think it will stop the band.”

Then, the ex-Beatle twisted the knife.

“They’re not really a band are they?” he asked his interviewer. “They’re singing boys who dance. One Direction is going in another direction.”

While Starr was probably just joking, he could easily draw the ire of die-hard One Direction fans on Twitter. After all, younger music fans have proven that they don’t necessarily respect The Beatles, or even know who they are. That much was proven back in January, when Kanye West fans took to the internet to ask who Paul McCartney was. McCartney has collaborated with west on numerous recent songs.

McCartney isn’t just working with global hip-hop celebrities at the moment, though. On the contrary, next month, he will have the honor of inducting Starr into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Starr, who will turn 75 this July, is the last of the four Beatles to be inducted into the Rock Hall as a solo artist. The band, of course, has been a staple of the Hall for decades.
