Kristen Schaal and Mary Steenburgen chat about working on '30 Rock' and 'A Walk in the Woods.'

In the new movie, A Walk in the Woods, travel writer, Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) decides to hike the Appalachian Trail. The peaceful walk he hopes to take is anything but peaceful once he agrees to travel with the only person he can find willing to join him – his estranged friend Katz (Nick Nolte). Kristen Schaal and Mary Steenburgen, who both happen to star in Fox’s The Last Man on Earth, appear in the film as women who cross paths with Bryson and Katz on their journey. They sat down to discuss everything from 30 Rock to work and marriage in Hollywood to A Walk in the Woods.

Were you jealous that you didn’t get to walk the trail?

Mary Steenburgen: I was in Atlanta in the heat so I have a rough idea of what the trail is like [laughing]. So I don’t know if I’m jealous.

But you were able to walk the trail.

Kristen Schaal: It was rough and dirty. At one point, they brought up Robert [Redford] and Nick [Nolte] on horses and we were just out roughing it. Everyone had to be a real team player. It wasn’t glamorous at all. You were taking breaks on rocks and fighting the wildlife off.

What kind of wildlife did you see?

Kristen: I didn’t.

Or were you talking about Nick and Robert?

Kristen: Exactly [laughing].

Were you in Atlanta too?

Kristen: Yeah. It was fun. I had to learn how to put up a tent really fast so I practiced. I tried to practice that in my hotel room and hotel rooms are not built for that.

So how was it to work with Nick and Robert?

Kristen: It was such a joy to work with legends. They had so many stories. I was just disappointed that I wasn’t on the set longer to soak it all up. There would be a quick moment before they called us to set and Robert would say, ‘hey Nick, when we have more time, I have an amazing story about John Steinbeck, Marilyn Monroe and my mom.’ I was like, ‘what? No!’ I’ll ask him about it today if I see him.
