Fierce storms expected to hammer California’s Bay Area today with rain, wind

Storms have already dumped lots of rain on the region, and heavy winds have knocked out power and cancelled flights.

The Bay Area is about to get blasted by heavy rain and winds in the coming days after getting pounded into Friday before getting a break yesterday.

The area is much in need of rain, and it has gotten plenty of that, with San Francisco getting 0.74 inches, Oakland over an inch, and Santa Rose 2.62 inches, according to an SFGate.com report. Wind peaked at nearly 50 miles per hour in San Francisco, and nearly 200 flights were canceled on Friday at San Francisco International Airport.

Another band of heavy rain is targeting the area beginning at sunrise and continuing throughout the day, with winds starting to pick up again as well. This time, San Francisco is likely to have 3 inches of rain dumped on it. After some isolated showers continue on Monday, the region will finally be able to see a few dry days.

Since the start of the rain season, the city has gotten 15.79 inches of rain, which is about an inch above average.

Recent storms in the area have wreaked havoc. Besides the flight cancellations, about 93,000 customers lost power on Friday, although it was restored to all but 1,250 customers by Saturday evening. The local utility, Pacific Gas and Electric, said that it is “prepared to respond to outages as the storm advances through our service area.”

The precipitation came in the form of snow for the Sierra, where 5 to 15 inches of snow dropped at 8,000 feet of elevation. The new storm is likely to bring another 6 to 12 inches of snowfall to that same elevation, and an inch or two of snow at 5,000 feet of elevation.
