Post-POTUS: What will the Obamas do after the White House?

The president may return to his love of community organizing.

Yes, a sight selection for the presidential library of Barack Hussein Obama II has been identified in Chicago. One item off the the post-presidential list of things to do. The couple still have over a year-and-a-half in the White House, so it may be a bit premature to start thinking of such things and Michelle Obama says the time is not yet right. For now, she says, “it’s really about solidifying the work that we’re doing here.”

When that time arrives, however, finding a home will certainly be high on the list. The first lady has said that daughter Sasha – a soon-to-be 14-year-old – “will have a big vote” in that decision. Big sister Malia will be eighteen by then and will likely be away at college.

The family lived in Chicago before Obama became president and still owns the home they lived in. But whether they will permanently return there is unclear.

The Obamas have spent Christmases in the president’s native land of Hawaii and there is speculation whether this could be the spot. Although there is no evidence behind it, the recent $8.7 million purchase by Barack Obama Foundation chairman Marty Nesbitt of the Magnum, P.I. estate certainly fuels speculation. The property is close to Kailua, where the Obamas vacation. As well, it is the Foundation that is raising the funds needed to build the presidential library.

Already the author of three books, millions will surely ne paid for the memoirs of the nation’s first black president, as well as those of the first lady, who herself has penned a book about her garden on the South Lawn, American Grown. A contract the president has with the Random House obligates him to deliver a nonfiction work (one that would not be be his memoir) to that publisher after he leaves office.

Before becoming president, Obama had taught constitutional law and was a community organizer. He has publicly considered the possibility of doing either of these again. He has said he could again do the sort of work he did before, “just trying to find ways to help people — help young people get educations, and help people get jobs.” He said that sort of work is what he really loves to do.

It has been years since Mrs. Obama has been in a car with a window down and misses it. “I’m going to spend that first year just hanging out the window,” she said. This likely won’t be allowed, however, as the Secret Service agents will remain close to the Obamas.
