Want the ultimate GoPro accessory? 3D Robotics unveils a brand new quadcopter

The new quadcopter will allow GoPro users to send their camera a half mile away without losing connection, allowing them to make changes to modes or settings while it's in the air.

3D Robotics has unveiled what it hopes will be the ultimate GoPro accessory: a quadcopter drone that can take your GoPro anywhere you want it to go.

3D Robotics’ Solo, which includes a controller and an optional Solo Gimbal camera stabilizer, has been a couple of years in the making in partnership with GoPro, resulting in a drone that is ideally suited for GoPro use and can even be used for live HD streaming of video straight to your mobile device, according to a CNET report.

Chris Anderson, CEO and co-founder of 3D Robotics, said that Solo offers “deep integration” with GoPro devices, and because it has an on-board Linux computer, it can run apps for things such as tracking objects and artificial intelligence, and it boasts a broadband connection that can send video as well as flight data and telemetry, according to the report.

Anderson added that while GoPros are “great cameras,” it’s hard to control them from the air and keep it in WiFi range, which is something this drone supposedly solves.

To do so, the drone connects to a Hero port in the rear of the camera which is used typically for a touchscreen or a battery.

This will give users control of the camera from up to a half miles away. You can also change the modes and the settings of the camera without having to bring it back within WiFi range.

Anderson noted that the Linux computing power makes it possible to script camera movements, much like as it is done in Hollywood. It would produce shots that are virtually impossible to be flown by a human consistently.
