Clint Eastwood responds to rumor that he threatened to kill Michael Moore

Eastwood claims he never threatened Moore, and thanks him for inspiring moviegoers to watch 'American Sniper.'

Clint Eastwood was honored at the Legend of Cinema luncheon at CinemaCon on Wednesday, and while he was accepting his moviegoer-generated Fandango Fan Choice Award, the iconic action star finally settled rumors about his feud with Michael Moore. Eastwood denied the filmmaker’s claims that he threatened his life several years ago, and even thanked Moore for helping ensure American Sniper‘s record-breaking box office success through his scathing review of the film.

When Eastwood addressed the CinemaCon audience, he immediately denied holding any sort of grudge against Moore, but maintained a good sense of humor regarding the very public rivalry.

“Everyone keeps saying I threatened to kill Michael Moore. That’s not true,” said Eastwood, before adding, “It isn’t a bad idea.”

News of Eastwood’s alleged death threat first spread after Moore posted on Facebook in January that 10 years ago, Eastwood “stood in front of the National Board of Review awards dinner and announced to me and to the crowd that he would ‘kill’ me if I ever came to his house with my camera for an interview.”

Moore added in the same Facebook post that American Sniper is a “mess of a film that rewrites history. Eastwood believes that the filmmaker’s discussion of the film encouraged the moviegoing public to go and see it for themselves, which led to its fantastic box office performance.

“The right things kept happening. The right people complained about it,” said Eastwood. “People ask me, ‘What do you think of Michael Moore saying all this stuff?’ I said he’s probably right. That’s his opinion and he’s welcome to it.”

Eastwood added that the fact that people can think what they want without having to worry about anyone agreeing is “what’s great about this country,” but admitted that he still isn’t sure what he would do if “someone like (Moore)” showed up at his house with a camera crew.

“What do you do when he’s on your property? I guess you could shoot him,” said Eastwood.
