Chaos in Panama City Beach shooting: 7 injured, including 3 innocent college students: police

The sheriff's office said it was not surprised about the shooting, as during spring break lots of young people under the influence carry guns around.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man on charges of shooting seven people in Panama City Beach in Florida, three of whom were college students who were “innocent victims,” police said.

David Jamichael Daniels of Mobile, Alabama, was arrested on seven counts of attempted murder after witnesses identified him to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, according to an ABC News report.

Three people were in critical condition, three were in stable conditions, and one was in surgery, according to the report.

Three Alabama A&M University students were among those who were shot: 20-year-old Kearria Freed in critical condition, 20-year-old Kelli Regina Curry in stable condition, and 19-year-old Annesia Powell who was in surgery. They were there on spring break.

Those students were “in the wrong place” at the wrong time, according to the Bay County investigator. Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen said the shooting was not a surprise, as the area frequently has drunk people with guns and “no respect for themselves, others, and — most of all — authority,” he said according to the report, adding that it was a “recipe for disaster.”

The sheriff’s office indicated that there had been six firearm-related calls on Friday night, as well as a gun that was discharged at a condo and four firearms that were seized in a drug-related case.

A CNN report indicated it was “complete chaos” when police tried to find out what happened, according to McKeithen.

Authorities found three people with gunshot wounds inside a house, one outside the house, one in the road’s median strip, and two on the opposite side of the road, with about 100 witnesses that the police were trying to interview. It was such a chaotic scene that authorities called in deputies from five adjacent counties as well as the Florida Highway Patrol.

Police say they found a .40-caliber pistol in the backyard of a resident that they believe was involved in the shooting. No motive was immediately available.
