Hagrid from Harry Potter is hospitalized

Robbie Coltrane, better known as Rubeus Hagrid from the Harry Potter series, was taken to the hospital immediately after a flight from London to Florida.

Robbie Coltrane, better known as Rubeus Hagrid from Harry Potter, was rushed to a Florida hospital on Thursday after a flight from the U.K. The 64-year-old actor reportedly had symptoms usually associated with the flu during his flight.

Coltrane was on a British Airways flight on his way to attend a Harry Potter Convention at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. He was met by paramedics who hurried him to the hospital where he was admitted over night for rest and observation.

Co-star Michael Gambon, who played the Headmaster wizard Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, was on the same plane travelling with Coltrane. Universal Studios released an announcement stating Coltrane will no longer be taking a part in the fan event and is resting in order to feel better.

A Celebration of Harry Potter is an annual event held at Universal Orlando where Harry Potter fans can come and enjoy a weekend with celebrities from the movies and dress up as their favorite characters. The event takes place between the two It’s a Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks and guests have the chance to get autographs and enjoy interviews with the film talent and keep the magic of Harry Potter alive.

Robbie Coltrane, originally Anthony Robert McMillan, has worked in television and film for over 30 years. He is best known for his role as Rubeus Hagrid in the on screen version of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels. He was born in Rutherglen, South Larnarkshire, Scotland, and began acting in his twenties where he decided on the stage name of Coltrane as a dedication to John Coltrane, the jazz saxophonist. He has appeared in several screen presentations between  1979 and 2014. The actor’s other major roles include Cracker, a 90’s British TV series, The World is Not Enough, Golden Eye, and in the role of Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond movies.

Harry Potter is a fantasy book series written by J.K. Rowling. Millions of people from all around the world were captivated watching young wizard, Harry Potter, an orphaned boy, grow up in Hogwartz School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. His parents were killed by Lord Voldemort, who attacked Harry, leaving a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on the baby’s forehead, as Harry learns from Rubeus Hagrid, a half-giant and keeper of the grounds and keys at Hogwarts. Harry Potter and and Hagrid become great friends throughout the seven-book series.

Hagrid was framed for opening the Chamber of Secrets and for using his pet Acromantula to attack several muggle-born students, where one was eventually killed. Even though he was expelled from Hogwarts and his wand was snapped, Hagrid was allowed to live on school grounds, a request from Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Upon Harry Potter’s entrance into the school, he was assigned to teach Harry about the wizarding world.

Robbie Coltrane has been released from the hospital, according to his agent, and has been instructed to get proper rest. At this time, no further information has been released as to the cause of Coltrane’s illness.
