‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ on the way for September

The series was delayed by the death of its original author, Stieg Larsson.

The next installment of the Millennium series, known better by most readers as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books, has been officially announced for a September publication date. According to a report from TIME, the fourth book in the acclaimed, best-selling series will be titled The Girl in the Spider’s Web, and will be hit shelves on September 1.

It has now been five years since the third book in the Millennium series, 2010’s The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Next, was officially published in North America. The reason for delay is obvious: in 2004, Stieg Larsson, the Swedish author who dreamed up the characters in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and penned the first three books in the series, passed away suddenly.

His works were published posthumously, and subsequently became an international phenomenon, becoming global bestsellers and spawning two film adaptations. Based on the TIME article, the books have so far sold 80 million copies worldwide, including 25 million in the United States. The furor over the Millennium series has understandably dimmed in the five years since the last book. However, it will likely be reignited this fall, when Knopf publishes the American version of the fourth book in the series.

Larsson initially planned for the Millennium series to last for 10 installments, and reportedly left behind an unfinished manuscript for the fourth book when he died in 2004. It is unclear how much of that manuscript was used for The Girl in the Spider’s Web, as Larsson’s publisher and estate have tapped David Lagercrantz, another Swedish writer, to take over the series.

However, it is likely that the new book will strive to preserve the legacy and storytelling style of Larsson’s books. On the newly unveiled cover for The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Lagercrantz is billed as “Continuing Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Series.” In any case, the new book will offer the next chapter in the story of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, two of the most well-known and beloved characters in post-millennial literature.
