Rose Byrne to reprise the role of Moira MacTaggert in upcoming X-Men film

Rose Byrne will return as Moira MacTaggert in the upcoming film X-Men: Apocalypse.

It has been confirmed that Rose Byrne will be reprising the role of Moira MacTaggert in the upcoming 20th Century Fox film X-Men: Apocalypse.

The character was introduced in 2011’s X-Men: First Class as a CIA agent and love interest for Charles Xavier. At the end of the film, Moira had her memory wiped by Xavier. The film will depict her first time seeing the returning characters in nearly 20 years, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Simon Kinberg, writer of Apocalypse, hints that the film will continue to explore the relationship between Xavier and Moira.

“It’s certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class, and would like to mine more in this one,” said Kinberg to Entertainment Weekly.

Moira MacTaggert was introduced by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum in 1975 in the comic Uncanny X-Men #96. She was originally a geneticist who ran the Mutant Research Center on Muir Island and helped Charles Xavier found his school and build Cerebro.

Details are scarce about the plot of the film, but Kinberg confirmed that this film will see the end of the character arcs that began in 2011 for Xavier, Beast, Mystique, and Magneto, portrayed by James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael Fassbender respectively.

Kinberg also stated his excitement to set the film in the early 1980s, roughly 20 years after First Class.

“That’s the era that I grew up in,” said Kinberg. “The music, the fashion, the video games: we really want to integrate all of that in the movie and have it infuse the movie with a different vibe.”

The writer confirmed that they will be exploring new mutant characters that could fit into this time period. When asked about the mutant Dazzler, a disco singer with the ability to turn sound into light, Kinberg laughed and said it “could happen.”

X-Men: Apocalypse will be directed by Bryan Singer and is set to be released on May 27, 2016.
