Malia Obama spotted hunting colleges in New York — will she go to Columbia, her dad’s school?

Malia Obama created a social media firestorm when she was seen touring several New York colleges on Friday, including Columbia, where Barack Obama graduated from back in the 1980s.

Malia Obama was spotted with her mother, First Lady Michelle Obama, getting private tours at multiple universities in New York City, causing many to speculate that she may be seeking to follow in her father’s footsteps by going to Columbia University.

Malia, 16, first made headlines last summer when she toured Stanford and University of California-Berkeley, and her recent tour of universities in New York on Friday got people buzzing on social media, according to a Christian Science Monitor report.

The report quoted witnesses who siad that the First Lady dined with some other unknown adults with her daughter at a separate table nearby with her friends, with Secret Service agents all nearby.

Malia, who is an aspiring filmmaker, toured New York University, Barnard College, and Columbia University — the latter of which her father, President Barack Obama, graduated from in 1983.

The public spotlight could make it difficult for Malia to pick her school, as she has been in the public eye since she was just 10, unlike Chelsea Clinton and the Bush twins, who were much older during their dads’ presidencies.

Of course, her position means that she has her pick of colleges, but there will be some other things that will complicate matters: for example, her safety, which will make it difficult for her to have a normal college experience with the need to be protected at all times. Also, she needs to be careful of anything that could be construed as an endorsement, whether it be political or any other type.

Malia still has a ways to go until she makes her decision, as she will be attending Sidwell Friends School in Washington until 2016, meaning that the beginning of her college years will coincide with the end of her father’s presidency.
